The Mo’Nique Show: A Bit Too Grown and Sexy?

Published by MediaMaven on Friday, July 9, 2010 at 12:03 pm.

Few would argue that Mo’Nique has exposed her viewers to all sorts of Black talent from violinists to video game developers and circus performers. She’s shined a light on those in fields that don’t get a lot of attention in everyday life. I think it’s good for young brothers and sisters to know that there are some unexplored avenues that they can enter and excel in.

This is one thing her fans love about the show. We want our young people to take risks, think outside the box and follow any dream … no matter how unique.

But does that include porn?

Recently, Mo’Nique welcomed, Mr. Marcus, a porn star who is also a business entrepreneur. He’s branded himself and has made an impressive living working in the world’s oldest profession.

What do you think? Mo’Nique is nothing if not nonjudgmental and open minded, but we know teens stay up past 11 p.m. We want them to know about the diverse range of talent in our community and the benefits of self employment, but is there a line, and if so, was it crossed?

Todd Kills Willis on “Mo’Nique”

Published by JamesP26 on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at 4:52 pm.

“Whatchu talkin’ ‘bout, Willis?”

Everyone knows Gary Coleman’s famous catchphrase. In this case, Todd Bridges is letting everyone know how he went from playing Willis on the hit series, “Diff’rent Strokes,” to being a drug addict and dealer in his new book, “Killing Willis.”

The book was actually written before the recent death of Gary Coleman for those of you crying foul, but his death does have people talking about the troubles that plagued the child actors of “Diff’rent Strokes.” It’s no secret that they weren’t living the storybook lives their characters on TV were. From Gary Coleman’s issues with his parents and money to both Dana Plato and Todd battling drugs and the law, the childhood stars have been the topic of many tabloids, and Todd opens up about it all.

This Monday, Todd will visit “The Mo’Nique Show” to talk about some of the things he details in the book. You might know a little bit about Todd’s troubled past, but I’m sure “Killing Willis” will surprise you like it did me.

Tune in to “The Mo’Nique Show” this Monday at 11 PM/10C for Todd Bridges.

In the meantime, check out the video below for some words from Todd on the book.

Silk Comes To “Mo’Nique”

Published by JamesP26 on Thursday, July 1, 2010 at 2:17 pm.

One of the best things about the ‘90s was the R&B slow jams, and Silk had some of the biggest hits of the time. The title of their breakout hit, “Freak Me,” pretty much explains the group’s main subject matter, and the song helped their debut album go double platinum. Keeping with the “bump and grind” theme, the group’s later hits included “If You” and “Meeting in My Bedroom.”

Word is the group is gearing up for a new album full of bedroom music. You can find out more by tuning in to “Mo’Nique” Tuesday, July 6 at 11 PM/10C. As an added bonus, you can reminisce about the ‘90s with this video now.

Mo’Nique Gets Spicy!

Published by JamesP26 on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 4:55 pm.

SpicyWifey

One reason we tune in to “Mo’Nique” every night is because we get more than just the latest info from our biggest celebrities. We’ve seen Black circus stars, video game developers, wrestlers and more. Mo’Nique definitely takes the time to highlight our stars outside of entertainment.

When Mo’Nique opens the show, she sometimes talks about keeping a marriage happy, and she often talks about the things that aren’t really “put out there” on other shows. Quintessence Patterson and Natalie Britt, the co-founders of Spicy Wifey, agree. Spicy Wifey provides products and services for married women, or those women not quite there yet but on their way.

Everyone hits a snag or two. You might want to sign up for one of their Seasoning Sessions if you and your hubby are getting a little bland. Speaking of seasoning…

Mo’Nique appreciates good food. Who doesn’t? When you travel to different hoods the first thing to find out is where to eat. If you happen to be in Fairburn, Georgia, you want to check out Miss Chick Southern Fried Chicken. It’s run by Ingrid Verdun, so go out and show her your support like Mo’Nique.

Mo’Nique gets Foxy

Published by JamesP26 on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 9:57 am.

PamGrier

Pam Grier has been called the first female action hero. She’s been fighting and shooting since the early ’70s when she became the queen of blaxploitation films with starring roles in “Black Mama, White Mama,” “Foxy Brown” and “Sheba Baby.” Or maybe you remember her from later films like “Mars Attacks,” where she was one of the very few celebrities from an all-star cast who actually made it to the end of the movie.

Either way, there’s no doubt that she paved the way for many women after her to show that they can be a force to be reckoned with. Think about rapper Foxy Brown, Beyoncé in “Austin Powers,” or any tough female roles in urban crime and action films and you can see how far Pam Grier’s influence has gone.

Although she lets it all out on the big and small screens, she’s been pretty secretive about her personal life. Now she’s finally ready to talk about everything, from her opinions about the films she’s been in to her past relationships, dealing with racism and her battle with cancer. It’s all in her new book, “Foxy: My Life in Three Acts,” which she’ll be talking about when she visits “The Mo’Nique Show.”

Tune in Thursday, May 6 at 12 PM/10 C for Pam Grier onThe Mo’Nique Show.”

Mo’Nique Welcomes Mint Condition

Published by MediaMaven on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 2:41 pm.

Mint Condition – Breakin’ My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)

I remember when Mint Condition hit the scene. With ballads like “Pretty Brown Eyes,” “You Send Me Swinging” and “What Kind of Man Would I Be?” they brought something fresh to an R&B landscape that was heavily pushing the “bump and grind” agenda.

I really appreciated the band ’cause they seemed to be real musicians. It wasn’t just a dude and a producer in a studio. Mint Condition is a band in the tradition of L.T.D. and Shalamar.

I also appreciated that these men sang about true love. It wasn’t just about rolling around in the hay. The lyrics to their songs made you believe there was a dude somewhere buying flowers and running a bath for the woman he loved. Her pretty brown eyes were sending him swinging, and I was loving every bit of it.

What has Mint Condition been up to? Tune in to “Mo’Nique” tonight at 11 PM/10C to find out, and watch a music video now.

The Mo’Nique Show: Should the Show Be More Diverse?

Published by MediaMaven on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at 12:56 pm.

fb_tms0203_RobinMo

Mo’Nique has gotten lots of praise for shining light on old, new and not-so-well-known Black talent. What other late-night show welcomes the UniverSoul Circus performers, Black video game developers and wrestling brothers? No one shows love to Black movers and shakers like “Mo’Nique.”

However, not everyone is too happy with Mo’Nique’s guest list. Yes, the penthouse boasts a diverse list of talent, but that roster seems a little less diverse when it comes to race.

Since the show started in October, the number of White guests can be counted on two hands, and I’m not sure you’d need to use all your fingers.

Robin Thicke, Ben Taylor and Brittany Daniel of “The Game” are a few non-minority guests who’ve made that limited list.

Some show fans love the focus on Blacks:

We need a show like Monique’s to continue to showcase all the Black talent that we otherwise would not see.” – Juanita

Others aren’t too happy about it:

“How come you don’t have any White guests on your show? It looks bad.” – gabbyfour

“I‘m so glad you have your own show. Is there a reason you don’t have any White people on your show? I’m sure White people love you.” - carol otto

Mo’Nique: The Fussin’ Over the Cussin’

Published by MediaMaven on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 1:42 pm.

 fb_tms199_monique

Of course, it’s not a surprise that many viewers of “The Mo’Nique Show” have used this blog to comment on her use of profanity. One thing’s for sure: Mo’Nique does not discriminate. Whether she’s speaking to her sidekick Rodney or gospel celebrities – such as Kirk Franklin, Tina Campbell or Marvin Sapp – Mo’Nique isn’t shy about using expletives; but is that disrespectful?

Some BET.com users think so:

“You are very disrespectful to the people that come on your show that you know are Christians… You cannot invite them on and then in the same welcome use any profanity… This is a detriment to what they do and who they serve. If you can’t honor the man or woman of God, do not invite.”

-trish

“I’m totally turned off by Mo’Nique and her show. She was so disrespectful last night to Kirk Franklin. It was to the point of disgusting to me. Everyone should try to strive to be the best they can be at their level, at their game, and stop idolizing these celebrities. When they are wrong, they’re wrong. It is what it is, and what she did last night was despicable, and I’ll never watch her show again. She should give Kirk and all Christians a public apology.”

-Ms. Mack.

Of course, there are also those who support Mo’s use and affinity for profanity.

“I cuss and I’m a REAL Christian so I understand you, Mo’Nique. So you have to want to change within yourself that’s between you and God. You are a fun and happy person. So, it’s on you. No one should force you. It will happen when it really hits you how much God loves you.”

-Jaqueline R. Williams

What does Mo’Nique have to say? She’s addressed it a few times, but here’s her latest explanation from a recent show, featuring Tina Campbell of Mary Mary:

“When it works for you, when it is your thing, when it is your destiny, when the Creator says, ‘This is what I need you to do. If you stay obedient to what I need you to do and don’t get caught up in man’s opinion…’ That’s how come oftentimes when people say, ‘Mo’Nique, you cuss so much.’ I’m like, ‘Listen. This is the way God made me… So, what I’ma say to all you cussers out there, keep on cussin’, baby. I’ll see you in church Sunday.’”

What side are you on?
