Torrence’s Take On The Ambassador “Situation”

May 19th, 2009

cmr_ambassadorBefore I begin, I’d like to say that this situation is a perfect example of why so many people are jaded and/or can’t be bothered with “church.”  You’ll see what I mean. Read the rest of this entry »

Torrence’s Talk with Tonex: Part 3

March 26th, 2009

Of all the clips, I’d probably call this the “Must Watch.”

In Part 3 of my convo with Tonex, he addresses the differences between the gospel industry and the gospel public, artist cliques and “deep” saints. (Floaties still by the door, on the left.) He also shares some surprising thoughts on “religion” as a whole.

Torrence’s Take on “Sunday Best” Episode 1

March 9th, 2009

I hope you all watched the Season Premiere of Sunday Best last night.

So if the intro was any indication, then we know this season is going to be GOOD!  I know the show is about contestants singing and auditioning for Bebe Winans and Mary Mary and what not, but they had me at the opening credits.  Thank God for DVR, because I did have to rewind it a few times. Those intro vocalists were sanging (that’s the special past/present church tense of the verb “sing”) and it just looked good! Ok, I’ll move off of that now.

I’m not a licensed minister by any means, but because it’s just me here today; I think I’ll have to fill in and perform the eulogy of our dearly beloved “Never Would Have Made It.”  It lived a good a life and was a blessing to us all for over 2 good years.  It saw some good times (Celebration of Gospel ‘08) and some bad times (Sunday Best Auditions ‘09).  Now it is time to put the song to rest! No, seriously; let it go! I’ve heard it in churches, talent shows and even subway cars.  It’s gotten to the point where I’m almost afraid to here Marvin Sapp sing it for fear of of having a nervous breakdown and it’s HIS SONG! “Never Would Have Made It?”May you get your sweet rest…in peace. Ah MEN!

Am I the only one who laughed at the young asian man making the constipated faces during  “Jesus Loves Me?”  I’m starting to notice a pattern with folks singing this song with a lot of pain and anger. What’s REALLY going on?  Click here to see what i’m talking about. He sounded good though, so I’m not mad.

Now what was up with the dude with the blonde mohawk and the little piece of something under his bottom lip? (I think it was hair and also intentional…)  I thought he was pretty good, even though Bebe could tell he was hoarse and he admitted to coming off a cold.  I would have appreciated seeing a bit more of him.  But ummm, what was that about not singing gospel a few years because you felt like all you were doing was “getting your money” when you were minister of music and choir director?  Brother, find the balance, because errrr, ummm, I’ve been those things too and there’s nothing wrong with serving the people of God and getting a check.  When the church has to go out and sing with the pastor, you won’t see him/her turn down the offering collected on their behalf.  Get yours! Amen! (I know i’m going to HEAR IT for this, but a job is a job and ministry can be exactly that!)

Note to Sunday Best Producers, please give these gospel rappers their own show, because this is the second year they’ve made their way up into this competition and they’re wearing me!  Next!

I’m not going to say a word about the Pink Panther also known as Margaret Fowler.  She said enough.  But wait, how was she going to put on that ridiculous get up, bells and all and NOT know the real words and melody to “Joybells keep ringing in my soul!?” That was like the first song you learned in the children’s choir. And by the way, I know she didn’t know, because one of the preliminary judges, Jermaine Sellers tried to sing it with her in the holding room. I was there!

Poor Tyrin. (I think that was his name.)  The bible does say somewhere to “make a melody in your heart” but in a singing competition, you might want to let that melody out of your mouth.  At the same time, I understand, I know I never could have done it either.  The nerve it takes to participate in a show like this? I just don’t have it!

Somebody remind me to do these recaps DURING the show next time, because I have totally forgotten everyone’s names. Tacky, I know.  But did anyone catch that rhinestone vest and easter bow contraption the young man in Chicago had on? But I have give him points for consistency and persistence.  He took that Vegas/Cabaret outfit and attempted to do a lounge lizard gospel interpretation.  He stayed on theme!

And what about John John? EXCELLENT! Let me find out that opera and classical music are the new gospel training grounds.  John John and another dude really blew me away and both shared classical music backgrounds.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.  You’re born with legs but you still need to LEARN how to use them.  Training will only enhance your gift!

Well that’s it for me today.  Of course I wasn’t going to comment on each and every moment in the show.  Who has that kind of time? I know you don’t! But if there’s something I missed, go ahead and comment and get a discussion going.  This could get interesting.

I’m out.

Torrence

P.S.: For the record, I thought the young lady who stuttered was good, but in a competition where there were only a few slots, I’m not sure I would have pushed her through either.  But like I told contestants as a preliminary judge in the DC auditions; some of your favorite gospel artists would not make it past the first round of these auditions, so not making it to the show takes nothing away from her ability or what’s in her future. Watch out for her!

P.P.S. Almost forgot!  Were those “Design Essentials” hair product commercials for real? *Shaking My Head*
