I want to feel like I’m not broke even though I am more then saving or investing. Problem I know for a lot of us. I think in time we will get it. It hasn’t been that long since we’ve been able to vote and live anywhere we want. We haven’t even had a century of freedom to advance. We still have the take all I can before it’s too late or gone. With more and more education we will turn around. Also with more and more of us getting successful the more change will occur. We’ve come far but need more time. I’ll get it together and so will my peps. We will over come one day, financially too!
Please I don’t mean to be rude but I think that some of you black Americans are very stupid. In the sense that with all the priviledges you have in your country you still think that somebody is responsible or should be forced to help you regardless of if she or he wants to help.
The story here is that Oprah wanted to give back to south Africa she is good friends with MAndela and when she went to visit him, after having a discussion with her friend Mandela, we all know the story of south Africa, enslaved in there own country, she promised to do something significant for her friend, so why question who she wants to extend her charity or kindness to, if you guys do not leave Oprah and something happens to that woman, because now you want to give her something to think about stress the poor lady out for nothing.
The black community as a whole needs to help each other build hospitals, provide doctors and nurses, drugs, beds and other things that most average black person cannot do, see how the jews support each other please learn to emulate good behaviour, encourage and don’t tear down one another even if they are from Africa, tell me what will you gain from tearing down somebody you just want to be an enemy of progress even when you don’t have the talent you still want to tear others down, listen you need to build your own talent and see how you can be like oprah and others that have given back tremendously.
You can only work on yourself and family and don’t be jealous of other people. Step up and wisen up black people otherwise we will always be slaves to other races just because the likes of Martin luther and Malcolm X fought the main war doesn’t mean that the war is over, it is just the beginning but this time it’s all about wits
We need smart black people to make decisions and implement orders.
I can’t believe that you guys are questioning Oprah’s kindness to South Africa.
The problem that I have with Oprah is that black people in the United States have supported her for years. And for Oprah to spend “her money”, that has been made by black supporters in the “United States”, is a slap in our face. Who supported her when she first started? Black people in the United States. Who supports her now? Black people in the United States Who will support her if something bad happens? Black people in the United States. Who has supported her play-the Color Purple? Black people in the United States. Therefore, she needs to support the Black community in the United States. And that’s not to say that she doesn’t, but when she says its her money and she can do whatever she pleases, that upsets me and makes me feel that I should stop supporting her. Because it doesn’t appear as if she wants to support the people who have supported her for YEARS!!
Thats Oprah money and not yours, so if you want to donate your hard earn money to a school in the United States you do that then. I’m glad that Oprah doing something to help those young lady get a proper education. There are millions of school in the United States . How many schools are there in South Africa?
I really dont think that is an issue of whos money it is. A lot of people jus feel like she could have done the same thing in this country. All black people are not broke this should not be a race thing we as a country should be able to come together and teach younger people how to be smarter with their money. If Oprah wants to builed ten more schools in africa then good for her the question we should ask our selves is how can we better ourselves and do the same…
Leave Oprah alone. She is a huge philanthropist and has helped many African-Americans to get an education. A woman of Oprah’s stature does not just belong to Black people. God has created her for the world.
I work for the public school system and have for a while. I can count on one hand the number of African-American students who appreciate education. Most students come from homes where neither their parent nor anyone else in their family has even a High School diploma. They go to school many times with out a healthy breakfast. And when they return home from school no one checks their home work. It has nothing to do with being poor because these same students show up to school with the latest electronic equipment and the fanciest designer clothes. It’s not even because their parent works because most of the parents don’t have jobs. If I was Oprah and knew this I would not open a school here.
While African-American students busy themselves with the least they can do to PASS, every day I see immigrants come to the public schools and study hard to get A’s and B’s. Mean while we fight each other over which boy has good hair, or wears the best sneakers, or the most expensive designer clothing. And which girl will make the best baby mama.
The parents of these children are even worse. Drive, or walk past any of these ghetto public schools and you will see the parents of African-American students hang out in front of the very school their children attend but they never set foot in.
Our problems as a people with money or anything else that troubles us is that we have disregarded all the wisdom of our elders and have instead settled for less by coveting and worshiping at the altar of the all mighty dollar.
people need to stop hating on her, its her money to do as she pleases. She sees what goes on around her, and she felt that africa needed to be helped out a little, she saw that a group of girls needed someone to help them achieve goals that we as americans can get at a drop of a dime, whereas they may die, just trying to fight to stay alive for the day. how can anyone be made at her for seeing what we see everyday; our young black men hanging on street corners, or in jail, our young girls pregnant and no education, why wouldn’t she do something for those who want something in life besides babies, men, and sex.
I too cannot believe that people are upset that she has built a school in Africa, as least there she knows where her money went and she see’s what was being done with it. Over the years I have seen money given to the state for schools or money given to charity and what happens( Oh I know ) The politians spent it. Some of these charities never give the money to where it’s suppose to go, so therefore I don’t blame her.
FYI she has given money to help build charter schools in different areas of the united states. If you want change in your public school system then we need to start voting and being a part of our childrens educations. I can’t tell you enough of how there are almost no black parents at the urban schools PTA (for the schools that do Have PTA) but in the suburbs you always see the white women at the PTA meeting and they are not all at home moms either a lot of them work. So If you want change don’t blame you have to participate to relate. A MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE!!!!

For one she did tell you, me, your momma, daddy or who ever to watch her show.People watch shows and support them because they like the show not to get something in return from her for watching the show. I am truly outraged that people, her own people at that had the nerve to criticize her reason to build a school in Africa rather than the US. Somebody please tell me how can one help someone that does not want to be helped. Even better what the hell have you done to encourage your people, before you answer that, encourage because it’s in your heart and NOT for glorification of thyself in the end. Do your research on Ms. Winfrey she is giving to America BLACK, WHITE, CHINESE, and JEWS ALL PEOPLE. When will we stop this division? It is time we step up and be renaissance Men and Women with a social continence. We need to define ourselves so we can redefine the world. Ms. Winfrey gives with her Heart and not as of some big tax shelter for her money. She doesn’t want to be in the headline that’s probably why so many inconsiderate comments are being made in the U.S. (EXAMPLE) I do know for a fact that Ms. Winfrey has giving Morehouse College 5 million dollars. On top of the five million, she has sent Men of Morehouse to be apart of the development of the Africa. There is no one to blame for the lack of ones willingness to educate himself or herself. But I am sure some tools of incompetence which build monument of nothingness will be used “EXCUSES.” They are many resources in this world that will allocate us to attend institutions of higher learning. Take some time to focus on being successful not financial but spiritually invest more time with your family and friends enjoy life. I realize what is going on in the world. I have job to do and that is to graduate, continue my studies, and do something that I will enjoy doing the rest of my life. I WOULD LIKE TO SAY PERSONALLY “THANK YOU OPRAH FOR BEING A BLESSING TO OUR LITTLE SISTERS IN AFRICA” AND FOR ALL OF YOU THAT ARE CRITICIZING HER-YOU NEED TO TAKE A TRIP TO AFRICA FOR A REALITY CHECK. THE POVERTY THAT WE HAVE HERE IN THE UNITED STATES IS NOTHING COMPARED TO THE POVERTY IN AFRICA. I CAN SAY THIS FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE-I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEND 2WK/YEAR FOR THE LAST 2YRS HELPING PROVIDE MEDICAL CARE TO OUR PEOPLE. THE ONLY THING THESE CHILDREN WANT IS TO BE EDUCATED, MOST CANT GO PAST 5TH GRADE UNLESS THERE PARENTS PAY FOR IT. I actually have nothing against Oprah spending her money where she sees fit to spend it, I do however have a problem with her statement that she started trying to help young blacks over here and she didn’t have time or something she said about that. Lets be honest she gets more recognition for what she does in Africa than what she does over here. Lets be real. Then the discussion that they had on Meet The Faith about how black people spend their money. They made it sound like we ALL spend our money on jewerly, clothes, and cars. That is completely untrue. I think that it was a disgrace how they, our own people at that, made it sound like we were a bunch of dummies walking around waiting to purchase the next “in” thing. My husband works extremely hard everyday (I don’t work because I am a stay at home mom and currently in school) and we still have trouble making ends meet. I think it is very harmful to generalize, which is what they were doing, and still have people respect us. How can we gain respect if we have people on t.v. that are black talking negatively about other black people. I think it is ridiculus and I was very disappointed in the way we were represented. The things they said have actually given those who already think that blacks are lazy more of a reason to think so.
This is one big problem African-Americans have failed to realize, rather than being responsible for their actions they always look for who to blame for their failure. If they don’t blame the white man, they will blame their fellow successful blacks. Most successful blacks in America sacrified a lot to be who they are today. if you chose to clap for oprah or support her while she was coming up, does that mean she owes you anything ? are you considering your support as a share in Oprah’s comapny.You should always ask yourself, what have I done for others today ? you dont have to have billions to help. The funniest thing is that empty barrels make the loudest noise. I bet my life on this, those who are making this noise that they supported oprah propably didn’t do nothing but watch her shows on T.V.while others where watching. It is sad that some of us feel like because we don’t have millions then we can’t help, false. Blacks expect the rich only to help. you don’t have to be rich to help others. Some of us can volunteer our time to educate the uneducated, give some of the little we have, but rather than solving our own problems, we blame the whites and the rich blacks. There are blacks who make more than whites in this country and they are still poor. They eat out all day, they fall for little tricks at car dealerships, refuse to shop around for reasonable loan when they want to make big purchases like house or car. Their goal to showing off not getting a good deal.then they wonder while they are poor. please let everyone be responsible for their actions and leave others alone. Blacks have a one time opportunity of coming together and making history in America by voting for obama.rather they will be at nightclubs drinking and critizing the innocent man. who is fighting hard to help their lazy ass. They are so quick to remember the bad side of obama rather than researching and talking more of his good side. It is sad how most of them will go vote for the white, then start complaing about racism.They never stick together, look at the jews, mexicans, chinese and other races.A mexican will work hard,send all the money he made back home to help his family members, while a blacks will workhard, hustle all day on the street and then end up spending all at a stripclub. I don’t feel it’s fair to assume that African Americans expect everything to be given to them. That may be the mindset of some , but not all. I’m proud to be Black and there is nothing wrong with being educated. The thing is, all schools are not equipped with good educators. Therefore the students don’t have an interest in learning. The sad thing is across the United States classrooms are filled each day with youth, teenager’s, and young adults who have teacher’s who lack in skills of teaching them math, science, reading, etc. All the blame can’t be put on the administration or faculty, because our community has a role to play in it also. The biggest and most important factor in it all is Parents. We must began to care more about our kids and become more involved in their education. I’m a single parent with 3 kids. The two oldest are attending college. My youngest is in high school. I just hope that we soon realize that money will only solve part of the problem. We have to become involved in order to make a difference.
i feel as though we need to stop worrying about what other people r doing and focus on what we are doing to make our communities better. time and time again we see this so why not stop complaining about a woman we worked hard for her money so what if she build that school we have to start within our own community don’t just wait for someone to fell sorry for us see everybody has a purpose in life we need to put the focus on more important issues out here and start helping and stop finger pointing and start pointing the finger at the real problem
i think everyone has a role or responsibility to take care of each other. “am i my brothers keeper?” yes! this statement is very true. we wonder why there is so much poverty in the world and why the u.s. is the wealthiest country and there are still so many people who don’t have a place to call home and food to eat or proper health insurance we have to look out for eachother. Yes it is offensive when blacks are portrayed as “money dumb” and lazy and whatever else has been said negatively about us; we have work to do folks; if we could all come together no matter what race rich or poor this country wouldn’t be like this. we cannot blame the rich or poor for not doing their part. instead of hating someone for what they got we need to try and network with them and ask them how we can get to where they are, or if i am doing so bad then help me show me how i can get better; we need better schools and teachers and better classes that can help our future attain the skills they need to survive. we need money management classes; self esteem clubs… etc. Share your ideas. you may think you cannot make a difference but one day it can really turn things around.
I think oprah is a very intelligent woman,I have know problem with her, and who she donates her money to. people need to realize that oprah has worked very hard to get where she is today.black people need to stop complaining,and build thier own wealth,and stop tearing down other people.Get motivated themselves stop looking for a hand out all the time.Please don’t get me wrong I feel everyone needs a helping hand sometimes,but when you expect it all the time thats when it becomes a problem.oprah keep doing what your doing stay focussed,and don’t listen to everybody.I found out in life your only one person.
I am South African and am very thankful to Oprah for having built the school.It will give those young girls an education most of us never had.Although I am currently doing graduate studies (PhD Computer Science) overseas, nobody who does not know can imagine the (deliberate) damage that education in apartheid South Africa did to the blacks.Now that the second phase of our struggle (transforming the economy) has begun, the effects of that education are everywhere to be seen.For a while at least, the lack of skills and (proper) education will slow down our national agenda for the forseeable future. We simply do not have a critical mass of adequately educated or suitably qualified blacks in many fields; be it in tertiary institutions, banking, engineering, commercial farming, you name it. Those suitably qualified blacks (who are a negligibly small fraction of the national population) are in high demand, and this has often led to job hopping, where salaries are the only reason people change jobs. In such situations gain in work experience gets valued less. But it is not their personal fault. They need big cars and big houses too.
South Africa has only emerged from darkness and still redefining itself as a nation. In South Africa, uneducated, mediocre,bigoted,
incompetent, or downright loser whites are the ones making the most noise about our new national agenda. I am dissapointed that the complaints leveled against Oprah by my brothers/sisters( yes you are, you’ve just been stressed that’s all) in the US can only help to entrench the unfortunate status quo we have in SA today.These complaints find good audience with the sort of whites (and their media) I mentioned. Apparently they read.
You guys have been freer longer than we have. You are more educated than we are. You certainly are wealthier than we are. So you certainly have much to offer ,all of it not free. So why don’t you do a tour of SA and see just how much opportunity there is for you as a black person to run a very profitable business over there? Spend two weeks, US$1 = R7; it should be cheap for you. When you return to the States you wont be complaining but excited.Because then you will realize that you can still lift up your people and make lots of money by the way.No, we wont hold that against you when you’ve made as much money as Oprah has. We will rejoice. You are a brother/sister. I DARE YOU.
I completely agree with Sajdah Sabree-Jordan’s comment. Oprah has done many things for the black community in the US, and she is also a woman that is a Blessing to many. What she has done in Africa is so monumental. The reality is, while the state of the American negro on a whole in society is not on a level playing field with the majority, there are more opportunities here for us than there are for OUR people in Africa. In addition, instead of questioning her decision to help people period, how about we look to other Black figures who have been blessed with so much money, and ask what the heck have they done to help anyone but themselves?
How many successful rappers are there from New Orleans, however, the schools in the city are still dilapidated and children have no choice but to get their education in these deteriorating institutions. How many athletes, music artists,Entrepreneurs, and CEO’s are there who come from the slums, however havent even donated an hour of their time, nevermind money, to give back to their community in a substantial manner to assure that they leave the people who live there now in a better condition. If you have an issue with what she did, then you become successful, and do with your money what you think Oprah should have done with hers; or, you can charge those successful people from our community who have done NOTHING, to make a contribution to their own neighborhoods instead of buying that 8th car, or that 6th house.
I will mention that there are figures who are successful in our community that are athletes, artists, etc. who have given back, and most of them are people that we do not see daily on Television, and dont get recognized publicly for their efforts. In comparison, they are also a small percentage of what contributions could be made if more successful artists were charged with the responsibility to atleast give back to their own community. We need to start saying things like, 50 cent, I admire you, and you are from my hometown, can you help us get newer books to learn from in our schools, or can you sponsor some extra-curricular programs in our community center so that we can be exposed to other options that we regularly could not afford.
Let’s get in the habit of supporting those of us who do give back. sometimes in our community its like “damned if you do, damned if you don’t,” because even when someone does something positive, we find a way to knock them for it. Oprah has done numerous things to uplift people in this world, and I wish that other front Runners in our community would make lasting contributions like she has.
I am watching this Sundays show and I wish I could be on the panel. My first question is for Elizabeth; do you claim to be black openly or do you only claim to be black when it fits you. Did the color of you skin allow to you go through what dark skin blacks have went through?
In regards to light skin and dark skin, I believe that is up to us as a whole. We need to be one and come together as a unit first instead of trying to be united with other races first. We need to be our own role models and stop looking at the white race for answers to our questions.
Lastly, I am a dark skin person and proud of it and I am moving up(with a long of hard work) I just ask that if you think I am cute just say you do not have to add on and say ‘you are cute to be so dark’. No matter the tone of your skin you will always be black unless you think being white will make your life better
What about the people who’s been broke all their life but then they go to college, get a banging career and start making bundles of money. Are these people not suppose to enjoy the fruit of their labor? Why can’t we live out our dreams? As long as you give back, it’s all good!

More than anything I was taken aback by Ms. Winfrey’s comments regarding children in this country and how they feel about education. Is it me, or is there no one in the black community who feels Ms. Winfrey should be held accountable for her words. She later gave a half-hearted apology for her “poor word choice”, but is that enough? Being a young man of color, my worries are less about how much money I have in my pockets, and more about will I be afforded the opportunities that my ancestors died for. Let’s face it, the Myth that is the American Dream does not apply to me or those that look like me (meaning other black males). I worked very hard to complete high school and then college, under the impression that I too could achieve the illusive American Dream. I quickly found out that the world has no love for little black boys, and whatever I was going to accomplish I would have to do it on my own. Being a child born in the 70’s, and in the rural south, I was able to see the remnants of segregation and Jim Crow first hand (and trust me the south hasnt changed all that much). It would have been wonderful to see a person of color establish something in this country geared towards uplifting our people other than welfare, the housing project system or prisons. There are youth in this country whose lives don’t allow them the opportunity to have Xbox, Nikes, or any of the luxury items which Ms. Winfrey seems to think they all want. There are those who would love the chance to get a solid education, but sense we have deemed Ms. Winfrey “a God on Land,” her words seem to be law. The saddest thing about all of this, is Ms. Winfrey thinks she is right about our people. Well, I ask you this Ms. Winfrey how many times have you lefted your high-rise on Michigan Ave and acutally sat and converesed with a memeber of our race who is less fortunate than yourself (and sorry you dont get a pass because of your work with Hurricane Katrina victims or because of that school you built in Africa)? When was the last time you felt hunger and pain and hopelessness (all in this great country of ours)? Oh my bad, only Africans are in need of help.
After watching Meet The Faith with Oprah Winfrey, I’m not sure what all of the fuss is about with what she does with HER money. How can any of us tell anybody what to do with THEIR money? The question is what are we doing with OUR money? No one can question who she brings on her show, what she does and where she does it. Instead, we need to focus on what our purpose is and where our giving is. Also, if over 700 billion dollars went through our (Blacks) hands in one given year and we are tripping about what Oprah gives, we should be ashamed of ourselves that we are still in debt and poverty. Having had that much money in the black communities and yet we see rims on our cars, name brand jeans sagging on our bodies, gold in our teeth and bling on our wrists, we should be ashamed. Yet when will WE change? When will 106 and park and videos showcasing us with depreciating things be something we shun instead of embrace? We need to wake up and sweep around our own front porch and be more concerned about how to get out of poverty, where our money is going, getting out of debt, investing and saving and raising a generaton not in debt than what ANYONE does with the money they have or worked for!! We arrived early & waited 2.5 for rain to stop. The game started at 3PM.
I noticed 16 African American fans during that whole time.
I multiplied 16 times 8 to get 128 to estimate a total number of FANS of color.
There were 22,626 fans in attendance. That’s less than 1% African American to Caucasian Americans.
A few additional observations:
-100% of the uniformed Police working the game were African American.
-Nearly 100% of the Concession Stand workers were African American.
-100% of the food & beverage vendors in the stands (carrying cases of beer with ice, hot-dogs and Pepsi) were Caucasian American.
-100% of the Ushers were Caucasian Americans. Are the Ushers volunteers?
-100% of the (outside) ticket brokers were African American.
