Soul Train was and will always be a hotbed of the newest fashion trends. This year’s Soul Train Awards didn’t fall short on its sartorial legacy. From all black ensembles to sequined jackets and over the top accessories, we are counting down our TOP FIVE FASHION MOMENTS.
1. Chrisette Michele
With mega-stylist—and co-host for the STA Pre-Show—June Ambrose as her personal stylist, its no wonder this songstress (pictured above) was D.O.A. (Decadence On Arrival). Conjuring the sartorial spirit of madmoiselle Josephine Baker, she hit the purple carpet in an all black ensemble and turban. Definitely Soul approved.

Eric Benet promises that his new album Lost in Time will be bring back the real sounds of R&B. The soulful crooner has vowed to bring the spirit of 70’s R&B—a period he looks at as the best time for the genre—to the radiowaves. While R&B of today is “simplified” and about being a “machine” (his words not ours), its refreshing to see someone pulling from the past to create a modern musical legacy. “I have the record I wanted to make exactly the way I wanted to make it. I can’t wait to share this with the world…If [people] love R&B and soul music from the 70s, then they’re gonna have to have this record in their collection.” Well said Eric.

El Debarge teamed up with Faith Evans for ”Lay With You,” a duet featured on his new album Second Chance due out November 30th . In this intimate video, Faith boasts about loving DeBarge’s music and they even go into an impromptu cover of Notorious B.I.G’s “One More Chance,” (which of course used a sample from the DeBarge 1983 classic “Stay With Me”).

Director Bille Woodruff (Honey, Beauty Shop) is set to deliver a new biopic of Florence Ballard played by R&B verteran Faith Evans. Ballard was the original lead singer of The Supremes before being overshadowed by Diana Ross. Although it seems her true story has been insinuated in the film Sparkle and hit Broadway musical Dreamgirls, this film’s screenplay has been adapted by Karen Spencer and Roy Fegan from Peter Benjaminson’s book The Lost Supreme.
Entitled Blondie, the film will uncover the “shocking details of Florence’s life from her moments of joy and success to her devastating betrayal and the actual cause of her premature death at the young age of 32.” It’s rumored that Soul Train Awards 2010 host Taraji P. Henson has been offered the role of Diana Ross but has yet to sign on.

The single will be featured on Benet’s upcoming album Lost In Time, out November 30th. This isn’t the first time the pair have made musical magic together.
