Catching Up With Manny Pacquiao

Published by Marcus Vanderberg on Friday, November 12, 2010 at 2:28 pm.

The best pound-for-pound fighter in the world (Sorry, Floyd Mayweather), Manny Pacquiao, steps in the ring Saturday night (HBO PPV) in search of his eighth title in eight different weight classes, squaring off against Antonio Margarito for the WBC Super Welterweight championship.

When he’s not training for fights, Pacquiao is a congressional representative of the Sarangani province, which has been a distraction in the eyes of trainer Freddie Roach.

Distractions or no distractions, Pacquiao will be focused on the task at hand when the bell rings from Cowboys Stadium.

Pacquiao chatted with BET.com after arriving in Los Angeles from the Philippines and talks about his future in the sport of boxing and if he will ever fight Mayweather.

BET.com: How is training camp coming along?

Manny Pacquiao: It’s good. We were able to train in the Philippines for three weeks and came here for the last three weeks.

Are the reports about you having distractions in training camp accurate?

It depends on who you ask. If you ask my trainer and my conditioning coach, then yes. I think they feel there are distractions because they are not comfortable in the Philippines. They are homesick I think. For me, it’s part of my life and part of my job. It is my responsibility to do these things.

Are you and Freddie Roach on the same page in terms of training for this fight?

Yes, I think so. We have had discussions when we have been in the gym and we are doing a good job in the gym.

Any concern about the size advantage that Antonio Margarito has?

We prepared for the fight against Margarito. I think he’s a bigger fighter but my speed, quickness and power will be enough to control the fight and I will be able to show my skills.

Who is the better singer: Manny Pacquiao or Will Ferrell?

Oh my god. [Laughs] I think hopefully me. If he’s better than me … yeah. Wow. Hopefully me.  I had lots of fun. It’s my third time there [On Jimmy Kimmel].

Why do you think Amir Khan should fight Floyd Mayweather?

I think it would be a good fight for Amir. His style is fast and he has some power. He’s a good amateur boxer and Floyd was an amateur fighter.

Do you think Khan would win the fight?

Yes, I think if those two fought, it would be a great fight, but with Amir, he might win that fight.

How much longer do you see yourself fighting?

Maybe another three or four fights. It depends on who the opponents are. At this point in my career, I don’t need to fight for money. It’s more about giving back to the fans because they have been so good to me with the De La Hoya, Hatton and Cotto fights. I need to give back to the fans because they are the ones that make Manny Pacquiao, Manny Pacquiao.

Is there something else you want to prove in your last 3-4 fights?

I don’t need to prove anything, anymore. I just need to keep proving to the fans that I will fight the best and I’m willing to fight whoever, whenever. Hopefully we can get the Mayweather fight done.

Is that something your camp is working on?

I don’t know. My job is to train and win the fights.

Mayweather And Pacquiao At Crossroads In Their Career

Published by Marcus Vanderberg on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 12:25 am.

With Manny Pacquiao preparing for Antonio Margarito this weekend on HBO pay-per-view, Floyd Mayweather was issued a restraining order by a Las Vegas court, ordering the boxer to stay away from his ex-girlfriend and two sons.

Mayweather wasn’t required in court on Tuesday when Justice of the Peace Diana Sullivan issued the order and is giving Floyd a week to pay $31,000 in bail.

If convicted on all eight misdemeanor and felony charges, Mayweather faces up to 34 years in prison.

Even though he’s not due back in court until January, the odds of Mayweather fighting Pacquiao are slipping away.

With Pacquiao slowly winding down his career and Mayweather possibly facing the end of his due to his legal trouble, it would make sense for both fighters to get in the ring as soon as possible.

Check back later this week for an exclusive interview with Manny Pacquiao, where he discusses one day taking on Mayweather in the ring.

Pacquiao To Fight Nov. 13, Against Mayweather?

Published by Marcus Vanderberg on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 7:12 pm.

Newly elected Filipino congressman Manny Pacquiao will next fight on Nov. 13.

Will Floyd Mayweather be his opponent?

“The fight we want to do is the Mayweather fight,” Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said. “There is no question that is the fight the public wants. I’m very optimistic once we start we will conclude this time [but] you never know.”

Boxing fans were led on earlier this year as negotiations took place between Pacquiao and Mayweather for a megafight in March.

But Mayweather’s stipulation for Olympic style drug testing derailed talks and Pacquiao fought Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium instead.

This fight has to happen. Not just because there’s too much money on the line for both boxers but they are running out of opponents at the welterweight division.

Neither fighter wants a piece of Paul Williams, the lanky boxer that defeated Kermit Cintron by split decision last weekend.

Shane Mosley was exposed at the hands of Mayweather and a fight between him and Pacquiao would be as lopsided as his unanimous decision loss two weeks ago.

Pencil in Nov. 13 for Mayweather-Pacquiao but cross your fingers that the two sides can work out their differences and give boxing fans what they have been wanting to see.

Mayweather-Pacquiao … Now What?

Published by Marcus Vanderberg on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 6:57 pm.

So umm … about that fight …

The on-again, off-again fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao is dead (for now).

After lawsuits, mediation and allegations of performance enhancing drugs, the two sides aren’t able to come to an agreement for drug testing.

Call it Floyd trying to find a way out or Pacquiao actually having something to hide, the fight’s not happening March 13.

Does this mean the fight won’t happen in the future?

Absolutely not.

There’s too much money for this fight not to happen eventually.

Until it does, Mayweather will continue to run his mouth.

Floyd released a statement on Thursday that said, “First and foremost, not only do I want to fight Manny Pacquiao, I want to whip his punk ass.”

Shut up, Floyd.

You had your chance to whip his punk ass.

Just shut up.

Mayweather-Pacquiao Almost A Done Deal

Published by Marcus Vanderberg on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at 1:41 am.

mayweatheek001369Let’s get ready to rumble … maybe.

Sources are reporting that Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao have agreed to a deal that would place the two fighters in the ring as soon as March.

The exact date and location are still up in the air, but the fight is expected to be on either March 13 or May 1 in Las Vegas, Dallas or New Orleans.

A fight of this magnitude might be too big for any venues in Las Vegas which is why the new Cowboys Stadium and the Superdome are possible options.

This fight needed to happen for the sport of boxing and it could generate up to 3 million PPV buys when the deal gets done.

As impressive as Pacquiao has been in his recent fights, the one guy who has the ability to slow him down is Mayweather.

Since it’s never too early to make predictions, who ya got?

Mayweather Calls Out Pacquiao

Published by Marcus Vanderberg on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 11:14 pm.

Well lookey here…

Manny Pacquiao has got the attention of Floyd Mayweather.

The undefeated boxer released a statement, essentially calling out Pacquiao after his victory over Miguel Cotto on Saturday.

“Manny Pacquiao is the fighter and every time someone asks him if he wants to fight me, he says it is up to my promoter … ,” Mayweather said in a statement. “I have yet to hear him actually say, ‘Yes, I want to fight Mayweather.’ We are the fighters and if one fighter is talking about fighting another fighter, then they should just come out and say it. Manny Pacquiao doesn’t say anything directly about fighting me because he might just know it’s not a fight he can win. Tell Manny Pacquiao to be his own man and stop letting everyone, including his loudmouth trainer, talk for him. If Manny Pacquiao wants to fight me, all he has to do is step up to the plate and say it himself.”

This coming from the guy who wouldn’t speak about Pacquiao by name leading up to his comeback fight against Juan Manuel Marquez.

Manny has never backed down from a fight and I don’t see him backing down now.

Boxing fans will have to sit and play the waiting game while the two fighters work play the back-and-forth games while their management teams work out the details.

Let’s see how Pacquiao responds…

Mayweather-Pacqiuao? Don’t Get Hopes Up

Published by Marcus Vanderberg on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at 11:49 pm.

For those of you hoping for a Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacqiuao fight in 2010, don’t get your hopes up.

He’s more likely to wrestle John Cena at Wrestlemania 26 than step in the fight with Pacquiao next year.

Yes, it would make the most sense after Pacquiao’s dominating victory over Miguel Cotto on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

But even Mayweather has to know that a fight with the world’s pound-for-pound best fighter isn’t a smart career move for him at the moment.

While he looked impressive during his fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, he’s coming back after a nearly two year layoff and could use another fight or two under his belt before even thinking about Pac Man.

And there are some who aren’t convinced that Mayweather did indeed come back to the sport because he missed boxing or if he needed a quick payday in order to pay off the IRS.

What’s next for both fighters will likely depend on the outcome of the Shane Mosley/Andre Berto January 30th fight that was announced hours before Pacquiao-Cotto.

In case you forgot, Mosley was the one who got in the ring following the Mayweather fight and essentially challenged him to a fight.

Assuming the younger Berto doesn’t upset Mosley, we could be looking at Mayweather-Mosley while Pacquiao searches for his next victim … err … opponent to step in the ring with him.

Cotto, Pacquiao Talk To BET.com Before Fight

Published by Marcus Vanderberg on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 2:51 pm.

PacquiaoCotto_FNL_2M

This Saturday in Las Vegas, Miguel Cotto will defend his WBO welterweight championship against Manny Pacquiao on HBO PPV.

If you haven’t seen a Pacquiao fight, you’re in for a treat as he’s easily the most exciting boxer in the sport.

Cotto will have his hands full to say the least as he attempts to defeat Pacquiao, who has destroyed his last two opponents in Oscar de la Hoya and Ricky Hatton.

Both fighters answered a few questions for BET.com leading up to their Saturday fight.

Miguel Cotto:

On changing training locations from Puerto Rico to Tampa has affected his preparation for the fight:

It’s a good place for me to train and it keeps me focus on the task at hand. There are no distractions and all I do is train and rest here as I prepare for my fights. The weather here is very much like Puerto Rico and that’s nice too.

On critics who said that he cuts too easily or doesn’t have a chin to take Manny’s punches:

I guess we will all find out one way or the another on Saturday, November 14 when we fight.

On if he’s worried about fighting at the catch weight of 145 pounds:

No. I have come in at 146 pounds for my last two fights and I don’t believe I will have a problem with 145. We are right on target to make that weight on November 13.

Manny Pacquiao:

On if he has any regrets in training in the Philippines:

I have no regrets about training in the Philippines.  It was inspiring to be among so many heroic people.  I gained so much strength from their bravery and can-do attitude.

On his current relationship with trainer Freddie Roach:

Nothing has changed between Freddie and me.  We are as close as we have ever been.

On which NBA star is his inspiration on the basketball court:

Michael Jordan…. a six-time world champion, like me!
